Please Support Our Relay for Life Team!
I'm asking my friends to support (with charitable donations to the American Cancer Society) our "team" in the Relay for Life.
For those who don't know, "Relay for Life" is the American Cancer Society's biggest fundraising effort, and consists of thousands of local events across the United States throughout the year. Each event lasts 24 hours (from Saturday morning to Sunday morning), and members of each team take turns walking on a track for the entire 24 hours. There are lots of family-friendly activities, as well as ceremonies to remember and celebrate those who've suffered from cancer, and to "fight back" against cancer.
I attended my first Relay for Life event last year, and was quite moved.
This year, my wife (Kary) has volunteered to be the Hayward Event Co-Chairperson for our local Relay for Life, and I'm coordinating a team called "Pirates of the CUREibbean" and seeking out support from friends and family. But let me stress that I'm not just asking for support for our team -- I'm also encouraging you to participate in your own community's local Relay for Life event.
Here are ways you can support Relay for Life:
- Donate to support our team. (If you donate to the American Cancer Society to support our team, then after the event I'll send you a link for pictures of me dressed in funny pirate attire.)
- Come attend our local "Relay for Life" event on May 17-18, 2008 in Hayward, California. You're also welcome to join our team!
- Attend the Relay for Life event in your local community. (Or join a local team. Or create your own team. Or donate to a local team. Or sponsor a local team, an entire local event, or become a national sponsor!)
Mark Welch's Professional Background
- From 1997 to 2008, Mark worked as an internet marketing consultant, advising e-commerce retailers on effective strategies for "performance-based" marketing, including affiliate programs and pay-per-click search. His first consulting client was the original Art.com. From 2000-2001, Mark served as "Chief Strategist" for MovieGoods.com, involved in nearly all aspects of the startup. He has advised dozens of retail e-commerce merchants on marketing strategies.
- From 1996 through 1999, Mark monitored and reported on "Web Site Banner Advertising" on his Adbility.com web site, which grew to more than $10,000 per month in revenue before its sale in late 1999.
- Since 2000, Mark has developed a variety of independent web sites, including directory sites like LitPlans.com (a directory of literature lesson plan resources for English teachers, sold in July 2007 for $50,100). He has also created dozens of affiliate web sites to promote products for his clients and other affiliate merchants. Mark has also run large pay-per-click search campaigns as an affiliate -- a highly profitable activity which also generates extremely valuable data for consulting clients.
- Mark is a licensed California attorney, although he has chosen not to accept any new legal clients since 1997. (He sold his professional web site to another law firm in 1998; he sold his "probate & trust attorney directory" web site in 1999.)
- Mark received his B.A. degree in Journalism (with an interdisciplinary concentration in computer science) in May 1983 from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He received his J.D. degree from the University of California at Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law, in May 1989.
- From 1987 through 1990, Mark co-authored a syndicated newspaper column, reviewing computer products for the law office. The column appeared in specialty legal newspapers. Earlier, Mark was a staff writer for InfoWorld and BYTE magazines.
- Mark authored a successful shareware computer program (the Generic Adventure Game System, in 1985) and co-authored a successor product (the Adventure Game Toolkit, released in 1987). He also did all the custom web development work for two database-driven web sites.
